Zig Ziglar said, "You can get everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want."
A powerful statement, but what does it actually mean?
It means that in order to be successful in our pursuits, we need to build a community of people interested in and excited about the work we're doing. How do we build a community? We focus on others. We build with service in mind.
Why should we listen?
Because while we are trying to build a business, we'll ultimately fail if we have no customers. Knowing what the customers want, asking questions and offering assistance where we can, helps us to understand how to best serve.
Focusing on others, helps build relationships. Meaningful relationships. In comparison, think about your most personal relationships. What makes them so deep? What value do you get out of them? Why do you keep going back to that person with whom you've bonded?
As people, we like to be liked. We appreciate being appreciated. We connect when people make an effort to get to know us. It makes us feel all warm and fuzzy inside. It's just human.
We're more comfortable with people we know and trust. Imagine your friend is a car salesman. What is the likelihood you'll buy from him/her and not someone else? Why? Because we trust that they have our best interests in mind and they're not just trying to make a commission off of us.
How do you build trust with your prospective clients or customers? Help them. Not with what you think they need, but what they're asking for.
Treating people like people recommends you as a human being, but also as a trustworthy entity that helps the customer get what they need. Therefore, they're more likely to come to you next time they need help. These consistent encounters will build momentum that leads to deep relationships not just focused on business aspects.
Building a reputation is important. Word of mouth, reviews, testimonials are all some prospective clients will have to go on when deciding whether to bring their business to you or not. Reviews can make or break your business, but laying the foundation for trust and empathy with your clients will leave glowing remarks on your reputation.
Even helping one person could have incredible impact on your business.
This takes time and effort. It's a drip process that brings in one client at a time, which can be frustrating when we're trying to build a business now. But it also allows us to focus on that one person and give them the time and attention they deserve.
The most successful people focus on helping others.

Jordan Belfort openly states that if his product isn't right for a client, he'll send them to his competitors where the client's needs can be better met. Bryan Harris has several groups/entities focused on helping people like you and me such as List Goal, 10k Subs, VideoFruit, etc. Countless authorpreneurs help each other by doing podcasts, webinars, and guest posts.
The truth of the matter is that we all need help every now and then. We need people to be successful and they need us sometimes too. Helping where we can builds good feeling all around. It makes us happier and it connects us to those we're helping.
In conclusion, building a business is really building a series of meaningful connections in which all parties benefit.
